Downloaded the Expendables?? Expect a $150,000 fine.
If you happened to be one of the 23,000 people from the United States who downloaded The Expendables from bit torrent you might just be hit with a massive $150,000 fine and taken to court. The USÂ Copyright Group (USCG) has submitted what is believed to be the largest law suit for downloading pirated movies.
March 17th, a US Federal Judge allowed the USCG access to retrieve the 23,000 downloader’s name, email address, phone number, and MAC address from all major ISPs. The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) state the plan is to offer a settlement between $1,500 – $2,500, if this is unpaid the USCG will take you to court for $150,000.
For those 23,332 people who thought they were going to be able to watch a free movie are ending up having to pay up to $150,000 for the privileged. I can’t say I have seen the movie yet, but I am sure it wasn’t worth it!
Perhaps this is the break companies such as NetFlix were waiting for as more and more people flock to legal streaming movie websites to keep up to date with the latest releases.
